Position fix

A position fix is the latitude and longitude attached to a logbook entry. It is what turns a note into a record you can plot, search and prove. Naucodex gives you three ways to set one: by GPS, by tap, or by typing.

What it does

  • Reads your device's GPS to fill in the position automatically when you create a logbook entry.
  • Lets you tap on the chart to set a position by sight — useful when the GPS is off or you want to log a sighting away from the boat.
  • Accepts a typed lat/long for those moments when you are working from a paper plot or a third-party device.
  • Stores positions in standard decimal degrees, so they export cleanly to any other navigation tool.
  • Plots every entry on the voyage's chart, so you can see the trip as a string of pins along the route.

How to use it

  1. Open or create a logbook entry.
  2. If your device's location services are on, the position fills in automatically. Skip to step 5.
  3. To set a fix by chart, tap Set position → On chart. Pan and tap. A pin drops where you tapped.
  4. To type a fix, tap Set position → Type. Enter the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (positive for North/East, negative for South/West).
  5. Save the entry. The pin now shows on the voyage's chart and the entry list.

Frequently asked

Why does the GPS sometimes say my position is far from where I am?

GPS accuracy depends on the device and the sky overhead. If the fix looks wrong, you can tap Set position → On chart and correct it. Naucodex will use your corrected position instead.

Can I add a position to an old entry?

Yes. Open the entry, tap Set position, and choose any of the three methods. The chart and the timeline update right away.
